Dot Martin Scholarship Golf Tournament Sets Fundraising Record

More than $62,000 raised to fund student-athlete scholarships

5/24/2010 5:40:37 PM

CANTON, Ga. - The Kennesaw State University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced that the 16th Annual Dot Martin Scholarship Classic, one of the primary fundraisers for KSU Athletics, raised a record-setting $62,000 to help fund student-athlete scholarships.

"We are so appreciative of our boosters, sponsors and alumni who have supported us during this difficult economic time," said Assistant Athletic Director of External Affairs George Olney. "To be able to sellout this year and to also have a waiting list for participants is staggering. In addition, to set a record for net proceeds is something that shows the deep and growing commitment to Kennesaw State and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics."

A record-breaking 136 players participated in this year's event at the BridgeMill Athletic Club. The foursome of Spencer Askew, Jim Askew, David Booth and Jeremy Smith won the event for the second consecutive year, after tying the record last year with a 22-under par 50, tying the 2008 record set by the foursome of KSU women's golf head coach Rhyll Brinsmead, Barbara Olney, Anne Corbett, and Pat Finegan.

The foursome of Caric Martin, Brian Katrek, Tony Van Horn and Jay Moseley finished in second place, while the Papa John's Pizza Team of Steve Hallisey, Chris Locher, Mike Rozier and Mike Mestey finished in third place.

Athletic scholarship costs represent roughly one-third of the annual departmental budget, and the money raised during the Dot Martin Scholarship Classic helps to offset some of the financial pressures of funding those scholarships. In total the event has raised over $360,000 for athletic scholarships, including an impressive $240,000 over the past five years.

"We look forward to growing the stature of the Dot Martin Classic in the future," added Olney. "The move to Division I has opened up many new doors for our department and the support of our community, alumni association, staff and student-athletes should continue the success of this event and help to increase the high level of success at Kennesaw State."

The annual tournament is named after long-time supporter of KSU Athletics, the late Dorothy "Dot" Martin, husband of Roy Martin and father of former baseball player Brad Martin. She was the co-founder of both the KSU Athletics Booster Club and the KSU Scholarship Golf Classic, which was renamed in her honor after her death in 1999.

The 2011 tournament is scheduled for Monday, May 16 at the BridgeMill Athletic Club. For more information contact George Olney at 770-499-3459 or via email at dotmartin@kennesaw.edu.
