Owls Wrap Up Regular Season at Home

Women's tennis faces off with UAB in final regular season match

4/9/2010 1:48:30 PM

KENNESAW, Ga. - The women's tennis team will finally get to face off with the UAB Blazers this weekend, after having the match postponed twice due to rain.  The Blazers (9-9) have an extra week to prepare for the Conference USA tournament, as the Owls (12-10) use this non-conference affair as preparation for their first appearance in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament next week in Deland, Fla.

"UAB is the perfect team to prepare us for the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament," commented head coach Brandon Padgett.  "They are a very solid team, and we're looking forward to having a good match out there on Saturday."

The Owls and Blazers have never faced each other before in a dual match, but many of the Owls have taken on Blazer opponents in tournament action in the fall.  Owl #5 Agatha Palider holds a 2-0 edge over Blazer #5 Jenny Cape, having defeated her twice in third set tiebreakers in the fall season.  Both players hail from Ontario, Canada.  Freshmen Iesha Holton also picked up a win this fall against UAB's Paula Alvarez, who has played at the #1 and #2 spots this spring for the Blazers.  Alvarez got revenge on the Owls by downing Mackenzie Swindall in two tight sets.

The match on Saturday will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will take place at the KSU Tennis Complex.  Admission is free to the public and parking is available in the East Parking Deck on campus.  Saturday's match will conclude the regular season for the Owls, as they are set to face off with Campbell on Thursday, April 15, at 4:30 p.m. at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center on the campus of Stetson University in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.
