BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Kennesaw State Owls travel to Birmingham, Ala. on Monday to take on the UAB Blazers in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m.
The dual contests between the Owls (17-13, 1-5 Away) and Blazers (20-9, 5-3 Home) was originally scheduled for March 2, but was canceled due to inclement weather in the Birmingham area.
These games will be two of just six remaining for Scott Whitlock’s club that are not against Atlantic Sun Conference opponents. On Wednesday will come another out-of-conference matchup between Tennessee Tech. The Owls, who are 3-3 in the A-Sun, will then face conference rivals in 14 of their 17 remaining contests.
Kennesaw State is coming off a doubleheader sweep against Mercer at Bailey Park on Saturday. Their first game went nine innings and ended when Klair Wells hit a walk-off solo home run to give the Owls the win, 4-3. They took the second contest, 9-5.
UAB is led at the plate by fifth year senior Martina Landrum. Landrum, an outfielder, comes into the game batting .404 with four home runs and 19 RBIs. Not far behind her is redshirt sophomore Kayla Orr, who is hitting at a .389 clip. Junior Alisha Smith and freshman Lauren Webster do the pitching for the Blazers, with records of 6-5 and 9-3 and earned run averages of 2.21 and 2.36, respectively.
Freshman Ashlee Burkett continues to hit for the Owls, smashing a solo home run in the Owls second game against Mercer. It was her sixth home run of the season and it marked the sixteenth game out of the team’s last nineteen that she has recorded at least one hit.
Redshirt sophomore Jessica Cross, for her part, also went yard in game two against Mercer. The home run was her ninth of the year, which is tied for the A-Sun lead, and her 28 RBIs also leads the conference. In the pitcher’s circle, she leads the Owls in wins, with 10, and her 1.54 earned run average is sixth in the conference.
