KENNESAW, Ga. - The women's tennis team made history today by qualifying for the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament with their 5-2 victory today over Belmont at the KSU Tennis Center. The Owls (11-10, 3-6 A-Sun) used a strong singles performance where they won 5 of 6 matches over the Bruins (3-13, 0-9 A-Sun).
The match was closer than the 5-2 result may indicate, as the Owls were down 2-0 in short time, after dropping the doubles point for the eighth time in nine conference matches. KSU did pick up the win at No. 3 doubles, but it was not enough as the top two teams both suffered close losses.
In singles, the Bruins jumped out to the early lead when Abigail Hogan routed Owl Iesha Holton, 6-1, 6-1. The Owls started to turn things around when Vera Shkundina closed out her opponent, only dropping one game in the process. Morgan Carney was involved in the match of the day, which stretched over three hours, before she closed out the match on her sixth match point, 6-4, 6-7(3), 7-5. Carney fell behind 5-2 in the final set before rallying for the victory over Laura Stack.
The Owls will return to the court on Tuesday, when they take on Mercer in a match that could determine the No. 5 and 6 seeds in the Atlantic Sun Tournament.
