KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State women’s tennis team and head coach Brandon Padgett handed out their annual awards on Sunday evening at the 2010 Student-Athlete Banquet at the KSU Convocation Center.
Vera Shkundina was named the team’s 2009-10 Most Outstanding Player for the second consecutive season after compiling a 17-7 record at No. 1 singles. Therese Lagerkvist received the Coaches Award after setting a Kennesaw State freshman record with 18 singles wins.
In just two seasons with the Owls, Shkundina has compiled a 32-11 record in singles and is the most highly honored player in the history of KSU women’s tennis, earning two All- Atlantic Sun Conference Awards as well as being named to the 2008-09 A-Sun All-Freshman team.
Lagerkvist enjoyed a stellar freshman season and was rewarded with a selection to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team. During the 2009-10 season, Lagerkvist posted the highest winning percentage in single with a 24-10 record and a .706 winning mark.
“There aren’t two players more deserving than Vera and Tess,” said Brandon Padgett. “Each of these young ladies exemplifies all the positive aspects of a Division I student-athlete and they represent our program well.”
The Owls concluded their first fully-fledged Division I season with their first trip to the Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Tennis Championship where they lost to Campbell in the first round.
