KENNESAW, Ga. – Kennesaw State head women’s tennis coach Brandon Padgett and the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has announced the signing of Alexandra Apostu to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Owls beginning in the fall of 2010.

A native of Bucharest, Romania, Apostu was ranked as high as No. 16 in the Romanian junior rankings and was ranked No.48 in the Romanian women's rankings. Apostu has won 10 singles tournament during her junior career, which was limited to matches in her native country.

“Alex is an excellent player who was unable to play outside of her home country of Romania during her junior tennis career,” said Padgett. “I expect Alex to come in and immediately help fill a void in the top half of our singles lineup."

A defensive player with a strong backhand, Apostu is coming off a solid season in which she enjoyed a pair of tournament victories against two top-ranked ITF opponents. She also played a three-set match with a top 100 ranked ITF opponent who has also had a WTA top 500 world ranking.

"Her work ethic and dedication to tennis are outstanding,” added Padgett. “I feel strongly that she will contribute to this team not only on the court, but also in the weight room and in the in the classroom as she is an excellent student. She has all of the attributes that you look for as a coach, and I am excited to have the opportunity to have her join our tennis family."

Apostu is the first signee for Padgett and the Owls this year. Kennesaw State recently played in their first-ever Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Tennis Championship. The Owls fall season begins in September.
