BRASELTON, Ga. – Jeff Karlsson rebounded from a tough start to his round and fired a 1-under par 71 on Monday to place himself in a tie for fourth after the first round of the men’s Atlantic Sun Conference Championship at the Legends Course at Chateau Elan in Braselton, Ga. After 18 holes Kennesaw State finds themselves in eighth place, shooting a team score of +13 301.
The Owls had four of their five players shoot in the 70s, with underclassmen leading the way for head coach Jay Moseley’s squad. Karlsson, a sophomore, was followed by freshman Ben Greene (74- t 18th) and sophomore Sam Curtis (77- t 33rd). Seniors Alex Jones and JP Putnam rounded out the scores for the Black and Gold with 79 and 81, respectively.
Karlsson started the day with three bogeys in his first four holes, but turned it on as the round went progressed. He countered a 2-over par 38 on his first nine holes (The Owls began play on Monday on the back nine) with a 3-under 33 on the second nine, finishing the day with six birdies to offset five bogeys to enter Tuesday just two shots off the individual lead.
He was 1-over par as he stepped up to the eighth tee, but finished with two consecutive birdies. His birdie on number eight was the most impressive, as he hit his tee shot into a bunker, but hit a great approach shot out of the sand from about 150 yards three feet from the hole to leave himself with a tap-in birdie.
Greene had the second lowest nine-hole score of the day for the Owls, going out with a 2-under par 34 that included an eagle 3 on the par-5 14th hole. His round was one of highs and lows, pairing an eagle and three birdies with three bogeys and two double bogeys.
The Owls currently sit in eighth place, 20 shots behind first round leader East Tennessee State, who had four out of five of their players shoot par or better on Monday on their way to a 7-under par 281. They lead Mercer by nine shots heading into second round play.
Kennesaw State begins their round on the 10th tee once again, and like on Monday, will begin at 8:45 a.m.
