NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. –Kennesaw State shot a school and Atlantic Sun Conference record 288 in the second round of the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Golf Championship as the Owls stand in second place just one stroke off the lead at the Venetian Bay Golf Club.

Tuesday’s record-breaking second round saw the Owls trim 11 shots off their first round score to come within one stroke of first place East Tennessee State. The Black and Gold fired an even-par 288 as they tied the conference record for the lowest round in tournament history.

"I'm so proud of this team and the effort they put in today,” said head coach Rhyll Brinsmead. “As a team we were seven over through three holes, to come back and shoot even par as a team is so rewarding."

The Owls slashed three shots off ETSU’s lead as the Buccaneers shot a 3-over par 291. Each Kennesaw State player improved their score from Monday’s first round as the Owls have three players in the top 10 with one round remaining.

The even-par 288 shot on Tuesday is the second lowest round of the year for Kennesaw State. The Black and Gold shot a 285 in the second round of the Challenge at Onion Creek in the final match of the fall season.

Ket Peamchuen led the Owls on the second day of the three-day event with a 2-under par 70 as she posted the second-lowest round of her collegiate career. Preamchuen has a streak of nine consecutive rounds in the 70’s, dating back to the Jackrabbit Invitational in mid- March. The freshman posted three birdies on the day, including back-to-back birdies on the eighth and ninth holes. She also birdied the par 4 14th, as she finished 1-under par on both the front and back nine.

"Again Ket was clutch when we really needed her to be,” commented Brinsmead. “She hit 17 greens today and put herself in a position to go low."

Jordan Lazenby, who is tied for second place with Preamchuen, also put up three birdies, including a pair on the back nine as she is in second place heading into tomorrow’s final round. The Cassellberry, Fla. native played an excellent round with only one blemish, a double-bogey on the par three third hole.

“Jordan’s play today was phenomenal,” added Brinsmead. “To double the third hole and shoot 71 is testament to her never-say-die attitude."

Abby Fitzgerald had the most birdies for the Owls on Tuesday, finishing with four, including three on the back nine. Fitzgerald, who cut six shots off her first round score, had an up-and-down round that included three bogeys and a double-bogey. She was at 3-over par through 14 holes before making birdies on two of the last four holes to finish at 1-over par.

Molly Winnett finished the second round with a 2-over par 74 after overcoming a pair of bogeys over the first three holes. Winnett sandwiched a six on the first hole and a four on the third hole with a birdie on the par 4 second hole. Patricia Arana finished with a 6-over par 78.

The third and final round of the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Golf Championship begins on Wednesday with full coverage available at www.golfstat.com. Arana tees off at 8:40 a.m. followed in eight-minute intervals by Fitzgerald, Winnett, Lazenby and Preamchuen.
