Owls Prepare for 2010 A-Sun Championships

Black and Gold set to challenge for conference championship

4/11/2010 12:22:06 PM

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. – The Kennesaw State Owls head to the 2010 Atlantic Sun Conference Women’s Golf Championships looking for a postseason berth as they play in their second conference championship beginning on Monday.

The Owls will play the three-day, 54-hole championship at the Venetian Bay Golf Club where they will look to improve on their 4th place finish from a year ago. The Black and Gold are eligible for an NCAA postseason berth for the first time after a successful reclassification from Division II to Division I.

Kennesaw State is looking to be the fourth different A-Sun champions over the last four years. The conference has had three different champions over the last three years with Stetson winning last season, preceded by ETSU in 2008 and Campbell in 2007 when they won the second of its back-to-back titles.

The Owls have played six of the 10 teams in the field and have a 6-5 record against A-Sun teams. Kennesaw State is undefeated against Mercer (2-0), Jacksonville (1-0) and FGCU (1-0) while splitting a pair of meetings with defending A-Sun champions Stetson and Campbell. East Tennessee State, the 2008 A-Sun champions, topped the Owls in three very competitive meetings this year.

The Black and Gold are led by freshman Ket Preamchuen, who owns six top-10 showings on the season, including a run of three straight during the month of October. A native of Chachoengsao, Thailand, Preamchuen leads an Owls squad that has finished in the top 5 in five tournaments this season.

Experience will be a major factor for the Owls in this year’s championship as Jordan Lazenby and Patricia Arana return for their second consecutive A-Sun tournament. Arana, an All-Freshman Team selection last year, finished 18th in the championship while Lazenby is coming off an eighth place finish last year. Abby Fitzgerald and Molly Winnett will be competing in their first championship.
