KENNESAW, Ga. - Vera Shkundina extended her winning streak to five matches, but it was not enough to get the Owls past the Blazers of UAB today at the KSU Tennis Complex. The Owls dropped the doubles point after dropping two of the three matches, then fell in four of the six singles for a 5-2 loss to conclude the regular season at 12-11.
UAB (10-9) dominated at the top doubles spot as well as third doubles, but the Owls were able to get an upset victory at No. 2 doubles, with the first-time pairing of Iesha Holton and Alena Sergeychik fighting from behind to pick up a 9-7 victory.
In singles, Shkundina raced to a 6-0, 5-1 lead before her opponent fought back to make the second set interesting, bringing it back to 4-5. Shkundina (16-7, No. 1 singles) was able to gather herself and finish off the match in straight sets, winning 6-0, 6-4. Fellow Russian sophomore Sergeychik also made the most of a rare appearance in singles, winning at the No. 4 spot in three sets.
The other singles matches on the day went the way of the Blazers, as the other four Owls in action played lengthy matches, but all fell, including a three-set defeat of Therese Lagerkvist at the No. 6 spot to Blazer Jenny Cape.
The Owls next take the court in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament this Thursday, when they face off with Campbell University at 4:30 p.m. The tournament is being held on the campus of Stetson University at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center.
