Owls face Libscomb and Belmont in key A-Sun matches this weekend

4/1/2010 10:07:00 PM

KENNESAW, Ga. - The women's tennis team will be home for their final three Atlantic Sun matches of the season, including two crucial matches this weekend against Lipscomb and Belmont that will help determine the remaining two spots in the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament.

On Friday, the Owls (9-10, 1-6 A-Sun) take on Lipscomb (4-14, 0-7 A-Sun) in a rematch of a close 4-3 affair a year ago which went the way of the Owls.  Lipscomb is looking for their first conference win since the 2006-07 season, when they defeated the Owls on the road in the program's first full season in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

"We went in to last year's match thinking we had it in the bag, and it almost cost us," commented head coach Brandon Padgett.  "We will be sure not to make the same mistake again.  Lipscomb has been improving every season, and has a solid nucleus."

On Saturday, the Owls have another important match when they face off with Belmont (3-11, 0-7 A-Sun).  The Owls also defeated the Bruins last season, 5-2.  Both opponents this weekend are in the hunt for one of two remaining spots in the conference tournament, along with Mercer and Jacksonville.  Both Belmont and Lipscomb will also face off with Mercer (5-8, 1-6 A-Sun) this weekend, and the playoff picture should be a lot clearer after Saturday.

"We have a chance to be the No. 5 seed in the tournament," added Padgett.  "But we also know if we don't put forward our best effort this weekend, we could end up out of the tournament altogether."

Friday's match will start at 1:00 p.m. at the KSU Tennis Complex, while Saturday's match with Belmont will begin at 10:00 a.m.  Parking for fans is available in the East Parking Deck on campus, and admission is free.
