ETSU Downs KSU Indoors

Owls fall to defending champs, 7-0

3/6/2010 1:11:50 AM

BRISTOL, Tenn. - The Lady Owls headed indoors on a sunny but chilly day at East Tennessee State, falling to the defending champions and preseason favorites, 7-0.  The Owls (6-6, 0-3 A-Sun) had trouble adjusting to the court conditions, where temperatures indoors fell into the low 30s when there was a malfunction with the heating unit in the tennis center.

"We have now played in just about every conceivable condition known to man," lamented head coach Brandon Padgett.  "Needless to say, we are all very excited to get to Florida next week and hopefully play some outdoor tennis."

After falling in all three doubles positions, the Owls had a few bright spots in singles, despite the results.  Vera Shkundina and Iesha Holton pushed the top two players in singles for the Bucs, but were unable to come away with victories.  The Bucs dominated throughout the lineup, never conceding more than 7 games in any one match.

"Vera and Iesha both played very solid matches against two of the best players in this conference," continued Padgett.

The Owls will head to Florida this weekend to prepare for their Monday match with Florida Gulf Coast University.  The Atlantic Sun tilt is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m. on the campus of FGCU.
