DELAND, Fla. - The women's tennis team suffered a 6-1 setback today against Stetson today at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center, dropping 8 of 9 matches played. Freshman standout Therese Lagerkvist continued her strong spring season, picking up the first individual win in the program's history against the perennial power in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
The Owls (8-10, 1-7 A-Sun) continued to struggle in doubles, dropping all three matches to the Hatters (13-5, 5-2 A-Sun). The singles proved a much more competitive affair for the Owls, however, as Morgan Carney raced to a first set win in her match, as did Lagerkvist.
Lagerkvist battled through a long first set in which she served for the first set on two occasions before finally closing it out, 7-5. The second set was much of the same, as she raced to a 5-2 lead and served for the match, before being broken and having to close it out on her second attempt, finally defeating Hatter Jacqueline Faulk, 7-5, 6-4. Carney dropped the second set of her match, and the subsequent tiebreaker, finally falling 2-6, 6-1, 1-0(7) to Hatter senior Breanna Atkinson.
"Tess (Therese) played a very solid match today, as did Morgan," commented head coach Brandon Padgett. "I felt like our team gave a solid effort today, but it wasn't quite enough."
The Owls will return to the court on Friday when they take on Bethune-Cookman in a non-conference match at the City Island Tennis Center. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
