Ospreys Clip Owls' Wings

Palider victorious in 6-1 loss to No. 70 UNF

3/19/2010 6:49:52 PM

KENNESAW, Ga. - The UNF Ospreys were too much to handle for the home team today, as the KSU Owls women's tennis team fell 6-1 to the No. 70-ranked Ospreys.  The loss for the Owls (7-9, 0-5 A-Sun) is the fifth straight in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

"We are just not able to put together a complete match," commented head coach Brandon Padgett.  "We have yet to do so this entire spring.  I hope we are able to find a way to turn things around quickly, before this season gets away from us completely."

The doubles point went to the Ospreys (13-1, 5-0 A-Sun), as the No. 1 team of Ayano Tanaka and Vera Shkundina were unable to repeat their strong performance earlier in the week against Troy, falling 8-2 to Berkenbrock and Castro of UNF.  The other two matches were much more competitive, with Morgan Carney and Mackenzie Swindall fighting back from a 4-0 deficit before eventually falling, 8-5.  At third doubles, it was heartbreak once again for the Owls, as they fell in a tiebreaker, 8-7(4).

In singles, the Ospreys overwhelmed the Owls at five of the six singles spots.  There was one bright spot for the Owls, though, as Agatha Palider played her most impressive match of the season.  Palider's triumph over Melanie Aguirre, 6-2, 6-3, raises her spring season record to 9-3.

"Agatha came out and played a great singles match from start to finish," continued Padgett.

The Owls will look to rebound on Saturday as they take on Jacksonville University at 1:00 p.m. at the KSU Tennis Center.
