KENNESAW, Ga. – The Kennesaw State softball team returns to Bailey Park after a 10-game absence, when they take on Southern Conference opponent Samford on Thursday afternoon at 3 p.m.
The Owls (12-10) will be looking to end a five-game losing streak, all of which took place in the state of Florida. Two close losses at Florida Gulf Coast in their Atlantic Sun Conference opening series, followed by three straight defeats as participants in the USF Under Armour Classic have the Owls looking for some redemption in their return home.
Things weren’t all bad in the Sunshine State for the Owls, who had several players stand out during their five-game trip south. Redshirt sophomore Jessica Cross, who was the dominant force at the plate early in the season for head coach Scott Whitlock’s club, has found her groove in the pitcher’s circle, as well. The Tunnel Hill, Ga. native made three starts in Florida, and pitched to a 1.88 ERA. Her performances included a tough loss against Stony Brook this past Sunday, when she pitched six shutout innings before giving up a run in the seventh to hand the Seawolves a, 1-0, victory over the Owls.
At the plate, freshman Ashley Burkett has become a consistent presence day in and day out. The first baseman has recorded at least one hit in 10 consecutive games before going 0-for-3 against Stony Brook. She batted .528 during her streak with two home runs and nine RBIs.
Samford (7-9) is led by sophomore pitcher and infielder Robyn Harmon. Harmon leads the Bulldogs in batting average and earned run average, with marks of .388 and 2.70, respectively.
Their game at Georgia State, which was scheduled for Wednesday, was postponed due to inclement weather.
