MURRELLS INLET, S.C. - The Kennesaw State men’s golf team shot a 23-over par 311 in the final round of the 2010 General Hackler Championship as the Owls finished in 11th place in the three-round event at the TPC of Myrtle Beach.

The Owls struggled on the first day of the two-day event, but seemed to have corrected things in the second round when they trimmed 11 shots of their opening round score. However, in the final round, the Black and Gold’s score jumped seven strokes as they finished with a 66-over par 930.

Kennesaw State (315-304-311-930, +66) topped Minnesota (308-304-322-934, +70) by four strokes while trailing Lamar by five strokes and No. 44-ranked Kent State by seven strokes.

“We were the highest ranked team going in to the tournament and with the rest of the field in the top 75 it’s not terrible to finish where we did,” commented head coach Jay Moseley. But, the ability is there and our guys know they can play better and must do a better job.”

J.P. Putnam led the Owls with an 11-over par 227 after shooting an even-par 72 on Tuesday’s final round. Putnam, who finished in a tie for 22nd place, enjoyed a strong front nine. The senior finished Tuesday 2-under par, including an eagle on the par 4 12th hole.

Putnam, whose 72 in the final round was tied for the fifth lowest round of the day, finished behind medalist Josh Anderson. A First Team All-West Coast Conference selection, Anderson finished at 1-under par 215, including an even-par 72 in the final round.

“J.P. had a good round today,” added Moseley. “It was the best round of the tournament and that’s something good for us to build on.”

Alex Jones (77-76-81-234, +18) finished tied for 41st while Jeff Karlsson (81-75-82-238, +22) and Sam Curtis (85-76-77-238, +22) finished tied for 50th place. Peder Hermansson (79-83-81-243, +26) was tied for 63rd place.

“Although we didn’t finish well we did a lot of positive things this week,” said Moseley. “We just didn’t make the puts we needed. Now, we know what are weaknesses are now, our short game, and we will work on that and get ready for Furman this week.”

The Owls will be back in action this weekend when they compete at the Furman Intercollegiate in Greenville, S.C.
