DAYTON, Ohio - The Kennesaw State Owls women's tennis team overwhelmed the Raiders of Wright State today, 6-1, at the South Regency Tennis Center. After sweeping the doubles point, the Owls rolled to straight-set victories in five of the six singles matches to claim the match.
"I am very happy with the way we came out today," commented head coach Brandon Padgett. "We struggled a little bit in doubles today, but I am very pleased with the way we played in singles."
Leading the way for the Owls (1-2) was All-Atlantic Sun sophomore Vera Shkundina, who notched an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles with freshmen partner Iesha Holton. Also victorious for the Owls in doubles were the teams of Morgan Carney and Mackenzie Swindall, and the duo of Ayano Tanaka and Therese Lagerkvist, who picked up the victory at No. 3 doubles over their counterparts from Wright State (1-3).
In singles, victories by Shkundina and Holton were followed by the only sore spot of the day for the Owls when Tanaka was defeated at the No. 2 spot. The remaining three singles matches went to the Owls, as Swindall clinched the victory with a quick 6-0, 6-2 victory, followed by wins by Agatha Palider and Lagerkvist.
"This was a good way to start the weekend," added Padgett. "I think this is good preparation for tomorrow, when we take on a strong University of Dayton squad."
The Owls and Dayton will face off at 3:00 p.m. tomorrow at Queen City Racquet Club in Cincinnati.
