Owls look for first win this weekend in Ohio

2/4/2010 3:52:24 PM

DAYTON, Ohio - The Kennesaw State Owls women's tennis team heads to Ohio this weekend to take on Wright State and Dayton in the first-ever meetings between both programs.

The Owls (0-2) square off against the Raiders of Wright State (1-2), who picked up their first victory of the season on Saturday after downing Robert Morris by a count of 7-0. Junior Kenisha Webb, who holds down the top spot in the singles lineup, leads the Raiders. Wright State finished the 2009-10 campaign with a 2-19 record.

"Wright State is in the process of building a strong tennis program," commented Owls head coach Brandon Padgett.  "We are coming in as the favorites, but we are focused on playing strong tennis and not taking any opponent lightly."

Dayton (0-1) dropped their only match of the season, a 4-3 defeat at the hands of Ball State. The Flyers are led by freshman Jessica Kirkland, who was victorious in her opening match at the No. 1 slot against Ball State.

Padgett is a former assistant coach at Dayton and Saturday’s match will be the first time he will face his former squad as an opponent.

"It's always exciting to get a chance to go back and see old faces," reminisced Padgett. "I am looking forward to going in there and having a great match with a solid team.  I see no reason why we should not be optimistic about this weekend."

The Owls and Wright State will meet at the South Regency Tennis Club on Friday at 11:30 a.m. and KSU will play Dayton on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. at the Queen City Racquet Club in Cincinnati.
