Lady Owls Tennis Edged by Campbell

Camels drop Owls to 0-2 in A-Sun with 4-3 win

2/27/2010 2:22:27 AM

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - The Campbell Camels avenged a 2009 defeat at the hands of the Kennesaw State women's tennis team with a 4-3 victory over the Owls on Friday at the Nisbet Tennis Center on the campus of Campbell.  Last season, the Camels were the first of many surprise victims of the fifth place Owls, but the Camels proved too strong for the Owls this time.

Doubles continued to haunt the Owls (6-5, 0-2 A-Sun), as the Camels (4-3, 1-0 A-Sun) raced to victories in all three doubles positions.  All three KSU doubles teams struggled mightily with the temperatures in the low 40s and gusting winds that were over 25 mph.

"Our team simply did not do a good job of handling the conditions today," commented head coach Brandon Padgett.  "Campbell played better in these conditions than we did, and I am not sure what else we can do at this point to improve our doubles play."

The singles affair was an even split, with each team taking three of the six matches played, giving the Camels the final 4-3 victory.  The Owls depth was once again evident, as the Owls claimed positions 4 through 6.  Agatha Palider continued her stellar play this spring with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Borislava Nikolova.  Ayano Tanaka returned to the lineup after being out with illness for nearly two weeks, and claimed a three-set win over Ana Surviladze, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(9).  The final victory came at No. 6 singles, where Therese Lagerkvist  raised her season record to 9-2 with a straight set win over Anais Gomar.

The Owls will return the court on Tuesday, March 2, when they face off with the Troy Trojans at home.  Match time is 2:00 p.m. at the KSU Tennis Complex.  Parking is available for fans in the East Parking Lot of campus.
