KENNESAW, Ga. - The Kennesaw State women's tennis program rose above .500 after two wins today at the KSU Tennis Complex. The Owls downed the Eagles of North Carolina Central University, 5-2, before blanking Savannah State University, 7-0.
Leading the Owls once again was sophomore Vera Shkundina, who finished the weekend 3-0 in singles after cruising to straight-set wins in both matches. Also finishing the weekend with a perfect record was freshman Therese Lagerkvist, who now holds the team's best record at 7-2 on the season.
In the opening match against the Eagles (2-6), the Owls swept through the doubles with ease, dropping only four games throughout the three matches. The singles was a much tighter affair, aside from the wins by Shkundina and Lagerkvist. Agatha Palider picked up a victory by forfeit after her opponent retired due to illness before taking the court, but the other three Owls who took the court in singles received stiff challenges by their opponents. Only Mackenzie Swindall was able to add to the Owls total, when she outlasted Ashley Rogers 2-6, 6-3, 1-0(7). Iesha Holton and Morgan Carney were both swept aside in straight sets by the Eagles at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively.
"I am happy to get above .500 for the season," commented head coach Brandon Padgett. "We need to refocus and prepare for a solid Presbyterian team that defeated us last year."
In the second match of the day, the Owls completely overwhelmed the Tigers (0-3), not dropping a game in any of the nine matches contested.
The Owls will return to the court on Tuesday, February 23 to face off with the Blue Hose of Presbyterian College. First serve is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and parking for the match at the KSU Tennis Complex is available in the East Parking Lot.
