Lady Owls head for Campbell, ETSU on latest road trip

2/10/2010 6:23:37 PM

KENNESAW, Ga. - Buoyed by a pair of one-point conference wins, the Kennesaw State women's basketball team will travel away from the friendly confines of the KSU Convocation Center, looking for its first road win of the season.  The Lady Owls will face Campbell this Thursday at 7 p.m. before a 1:30 p.m. showdown in Johnson City, Tenn., against East Tennessee State Saturday.

KSU (7-16, 4-10) is riding high after taking a pair of Atlantic Sun Conference contests to close out a four-game homestand.  The Lady Owls defeated Mercer, 52-51, last Thursday on the strength of a career-best 19 points by Brandi Jones.  Two days later, a 3-point play with 5.8 seconds left by Angie Smith lifted the Lady Owls to a, 69-68, win over USC Upstate.  Jones, who tied for game-high honors with 14 points, earned A-Sun Player of the Week honors in leading the Lady Owls to the two wins.

The Lady Owls are in the middle of a dogfight for a spot in the A-Sun Championships.  KSU is now tied with North Florida for the #7 seed, though if the tournament started today, UNF would own the tiebreaker based on a head-to-head win earlier this year.  Both schools hold a two and one-half game lead over Lipscomb for the final spot in the tournament, as the Lady Bisons sport a 2-13 A-Sun mark.  KSU is also just one-half game behind Stetson for the #6 seed in the tournament that comes at the end of the season.

KSU has had the advantage on Campbell the last six times the schools have met.  The Lady Owls have a 6-2 record overall against the Camels, with the last win coming on Jan. 7 at the Convocation Center when KSU took a win by a score of 75-65.

Campbell (13-10, 8-6) has already locked down a spot in the A-Sun Championships, but are trying to hold down the #2 seed for the tournament.  Currently, the Camels are tied with Mercer for that spot in the tourney, with the two schools colliding on Saturday in Buies Creek, N.C.

ETSU (14-8, 12-2) is trying to lock down the top seed in the A-Sun Championships.  With a four game lead on Mercer and Campbell, ETSU could potentially bring their magic number for clinching down to one with a pair of wins this weekend.  Earlier this year, the Lady Bucs knocked off KSU at the Convocation Center, 90-59.
