KENNESAW, Ga. - In Kennesaw State's contest at Atlantic Sun Conference foe Stetson Jan. 23, Angie Smith's desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer fell short, allowing Stetson to earn a three-point win. In Monday night's A-Sun contest, the same scenario played out, as Smith's 3-point shot at the buzzer fell short, giving Stetson a, 54-51, victory over the Lady Owls in an A-Sun contest at the KSU Convocation Center.
In a game that neither team led by more than six, the Lady Owls held a 42-36 lead with 11:12 to go before an 11-0 run by the Hatters gave the visitors a 47-42 lead with just under six minutes of action remaining. KSU rallied back down five, getting a pair of free-throws by DeAndrea Bullock and a jumper by Sametria Gideon to pull within one, 49-48.
The Hatters would make one free-throw to extend the advantage back to two, 50-48. KSU had a chance to tie, but the shots just wouldn't fall, both from the field and at the charity stripe. With 42 seconds left, the Hatters made a pair of free-throws to push the lead to four. Smith went 1-of-2 from the line, cutting the lead to three with 22 seconds remaining. The Hatters went 1-of-2 at the line, and smith made a lay-up in transition with nine seconds to go to cut the lead to two. KSU fouled Simone Taylor with 7.1 seconds remaining. She made the first, but missed the second, giving KSU a shot. Smith sprinted down court, heaving up a 3-point try just before the buzzer, but the shot drew iron, giving the Hatters the win.
Gideon had a career-high 18 rebounds, the most for a KSU player since Britteny Henderson grabbed 21 against Gardner-Webb Feb. 8, 2008. Bullock led the Lady Owls in scoring, netting 11 points while Smith and Lockett each added nine.
Tierra Brown came off the bench to score a game-high 16 points for the Hatters. Ashli Jackson scored 15 for Stetson, which was only playing with eight total players due to injuries. Simone Taylor had a team-best 12 rebounds.
The Lady Owls will be back in action this Thursday at 5 p.m. at the Convocation Center against in-state and A-Sun rival Mercer.
