JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Brandi Jones scored a season-high 13 points but it wasn't enough as a late, 15-0, run by Jacksonville State sent the Kennesaw State women's basketball team to a, 77-56, loss Tuesday night at Pete Matthews Coliseum.
"The immaturity of this team showed tonight," said KSU head coach Colby Tilley. "We were out-hustled and outplayed all night long. We didn't have any sort of winning effort in the contest, especially in the second half."
The Lady Owls (3-7) fell behind, 14-3, in the first three minutes but used a, 15-1, run to take a 18-15 lead. Lisa Capellan capped the run with a lay-up, as the Lady Owls shut down JSU offensively for seven minutes of the contest.
After Capellan's lay-up, the first half was tightly contested, featuring three ties and 10 lead changes. The Lady Owls would lead, 30-29, after an Angie Smith lay-up, but the Gamecocks scored four straight points to take the lead into the locer room at the half, 33-30.
Jacksonville State (4-8) continued the run in the second half, scoring the first five points to take a, 38-30, lead. KSU would pull within four, 40-36, after a 3-pointer by Brandi Jones, but Jacksonville State would continue to push the lead higher.
Still, the Lady Owls were in the contest with 4:34 to go after a free-throw by Sametria Gideon made the score, 62-56. That would be the last point the Lady Owls would score, as Jacksonville State would shut the Lady Owls down offensively while going on a, 15-0, run to close out the game.
Gideon led all Lady Owls scorers with 17, while Jones had 13 points while Ashley Holliday chipped in 10. KSU had a season-high 16 assists in the contest, led by Angie Smith's season-high five.
Brittany Wiley scored 18 points for the Gamecocks, with Danielle Beneby adding 13 and Destiny Lane scoring 12. The Gamecocks connected on 16-of-29 from the field in the second half.
The Lady Owls will be back in action next Monday when they take on USC Upstate in their first Atlantic Sun Conference contest at the KSU Convocation Center of the season. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m.
