CLEMSON, S.C. – Ashley Holliday had her second straight 17-point game, but Kennesaw State couldn’t overcome a 17-point halftime deficit as the Lady Owls fell to Clemson, 68-57, at Littlejohn Coliseum on Sunday afternoon.
The situation looked bright briefly for Kennesaw State (2-3) as Angie Smith scored the first points of the game, but Clemson (3-1) quickly rattled off 17 consecutive points and kept the Lady Owls at length the rest of the game.
Kennesaw State fell victim to Clemson’s size and another poor shooting performance. The Lady Owls connected on just 29.7 percent of their shots in the game, including a dismal 7-for-28 showing in the first half.
While the Black and Gold were able to control the offensive boards with an 18-13 advantage, Clemson decimated KSU on the defensive glass by a 41-20 margin. Sametria Gideon and Tamasha Bolden each grabbed five offensive rebounds while no KSU player had more than four defensive rebounds.
Holliday, who matched the career-high she set on Friday night against Alabama State, connected on four three-pointers and tried to keep Kennesaw State within striking distance. The Lady Owls were able to trim the Clemson lead to nine points twice in the early to mid stages of the second half.
Brandi Jones added 12 points for the Black and Gold who suffered its fourth straight loss to Clemson. Sthefany Thomas led all scorers with 18 points while Shaniqua Pauldo added 12 points and Kirstyn Wright dropped in 10 points off the bench.
Smith, who scored seven points in the first half, saw her streak of four consecutive double-digit scoring games come to an end with a nine-point performance. Kennesaw State committed just 11 turnovers, which was its season low.
The Lady Owls will be back in action on Thursday evening, Dec. 2 when they host former Atlantic Sun Conference member Gardner-Webb at 7:00 p.m. at the KSU Convocation Center.
