ATLANTA, Ga. – The Kennesaw State Lady Owls conclude their three-game, season-opening road trip on Wednesday evening as they take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
Kennesaw State and Georgia Tech will be playing for the sixth time with the Yellow Jackets winning all five previous meetings. Last year, the teams met in Kennesaw with the Yellow Jackets taking a 84-48 win behind Mo Bennett’s 23 points.
This season, the Lady Owls (1-1) are looking for their second straight win after defeating Florida Atlantic last Sunday. Georgia Tech (1-1) is looking to rebound from a 65-63 loss at Old Dominion with tonight’s game beginning a three-game homestand.
“Georgia Tech is a very talented team,” said Lady Owls head coach Colby Tilley. “What we have to do is have another good shooting night like we did against Florida Atlantic. We also need to handle their press and be patient with the ball.”
Angie Smith has enjoyed a strong start to the season. The junior guard is leading Kennesaw State in scoring at 14.5 points per game. The Miami, Fla. native scored a team-high 12-points in the season opener against Miami and followed with a 17-point effort in the win over FAU.
Sametria Gideon (11.5 ppg, 8.0 rpg) has been providing a solid inside presence thus far and is coming off the best game of her career, a 19-point, 16-rebound effort last Sunday at FAU.
“Sametria offers us a lot of options on offense and a solid presence on the defensive end,” commented Tilley. “Sunday’s game again showed that she has the ability to be a game changer and an impact player for us.”
The Yellow Jackets have enjoyed solid starts from freshman Ty Marshall, who after averaging 17.0 points, was named Atlantic Coast Conference Rookie of the Week and senior Alex Montgomery (15.5 ppg, 10.0 rpg) who is averaging a double-double after two games.
“Tonight gives our players another opportunity to go against a top opponent as we prepare for the conference season,” added Tilley. “McChelle (Joseph) continues to do an outstanding job at Tech and has a very deep, talented team. We’ll have to play not only very well, but very smart.”
The Lady Owls and the Yellow Jackets will tip-off at 5:00 p.m. and can also be heard live on 91.1 WREK and at www.WREK.org.
