DAUFUSKIE ISLAND, S.C. – The Kennesaw State men's golf team is right where head coach Jay Moseley had hoped they would be after 36-holes of golf. The Black and Gold shot a 301-292/593 after two rounds of the Rees Jones Intercollegiate in Daufuskie Island, S.C. The Owls positioned themselves 10 strokes ahead of Liberty with 18 holes remaining.
“Overall I was very pleased with our efforts today,” Moseley said. “The golf course was set up very difficult, and the guys played tough and mentally we were very prepared.”
Leading the way for the Owls is junior Matt Nagy, who posted a 70-73/143 to lead all individuals. Nagy was the only individual to log a negative scoring as his 1-under par score leads Chandler Brazeal of Wofford College by one stoke.
Junior Jeff Karlsson is just behind his teammate in fifth place at 4-over par, shooting a 77-71/148. Both Sophomore Ben Greene and Freshmen Jonathan Koltz are tied for ninth. Greene shot a 83-70/153 while Klotz turned in a 75-78/153. Senior Chad Wilson posted a 79-82/161 to finish tied for 40th.
The Owls finished the opening round tied for first with San Jose State (301), distancing themselves from the field in final 18 holes, the Black and Gold posted the second best score of the afternoon (292). The four contributors to squad’s scorecard finished the final five holes of the intercollegiate at 10-under par to give the team a cushion for tomorrow’s final round.
Nagy is tied for the most birdies with eight. Karlsson is tied for second with seven and Klotz totaled five. Greene recorded one of only four birdies. Nagy is second behind Brazeal in par-4 scoring, 3.95 (-1). Karlsson is tied for third in par-5 scoring, 4.88, (-1).
“Tomorrow will be tougher, but we are excited about the position we are in, and if we stick to our game plans and remain patient we will find ourselves in a great position for another win,” Moseley said.
The final round begins Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. on the Jones Signature Course at Haig Point Club.
