CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – It didn’t take long for first-year head coach T.J. Greggs to get his first win as leader of the Owls. In its second match of the season, Kennesaw State defeated Austin Peay, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Governors Indoor Tennis Center.

In the midst of a winter storm that blew through the city of Clarksville, the frigid temperatures did nothing but fuel the Owls fire as the Black and Gold (1-1) won for the first time this season. Kennesaw State took the doubles point and went on to receive a stellar effort from the bottom of the lineup as KSU won the match on the heels of victories at No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 singles.

The doubles team of Michael Langel and Simon Janik were victorious at the No. 2 flight as they topped Austin Peay’s Amar Subasic and Renan Bezerra by an 8-6 score to secure the crucial doubles point. The Owls No. 3 doubles team of Elliot Kahler and Gokalp Ozdemir defeated John Storie and Leonardo Locatelli, 8-4.

In singles, it was domination by Langel, Kahler and Ozdemir that propelled the Owls as all three won in straight sets. Langel stopped Bezerra, 6-2, 7-5 while Kahler thoroughly handled Subasic, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Ozdemir was a 6-4, 6-3 winner over Storie.

At No. 3 singles, Janik played the most competitive match of the day as he took Henrique Norbiato to three sets before falling in a third-set tiebreaker. Tyler Mills had his match decided in a tie-breaker, falling to Locatelli, 6-2, 7-6 (3-0).

The Owls will be back in action on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 2, when they battle Georgia State at 1:00 p.m. in Atlanta.
