MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Kennesaw State men’s tennis team dropped a, 7-0, decision to Memphis on Friday afternoon at the WellWorx Sporting Club. The Owls were unable to match the power and experience of the Tigers as they dropped their first match of the spring.
“Although the scores don’t reflect it,” commented head coach T.J. Greggs, “I thought we actually played some pretty solid tennis today. We were a little bit nervous, but I can’t complain with our effort or attitude.”
Memphis (1-2) started strongly in the doubles, dropping just five games between the three matches. The Owls (0-1) were unable to turn around their fortunes in the singles portion as well, being unable to muster a set against the Conference USA squad.
“We’re a young team, and our inexperience showed on some of the big points,” continued Greggs. “We were in a lot of deuce-game situations, but weren’t able to capitalize at the most critical times.”
Tyler Mills was close to stretching his match into a third set at the No. 2 spot, holding several break opportunities at 5-4, but his opponent was able to save all of the break points and hold to close out the win.
The Owls step back on the court tomorrow against Austin Peay State University at the Governor’s Campus in Clarksville, Tenn. First serve is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
