GREENVILLE, S.C. - Kennesaw State's first tournament of their fall season was cut a round short, as the final day of competition was cancelled due to the weather and resulting course conditions at the Paladin Invitational on Sunday.
After battling through a steady flow of rain over the first two days of the tournament, play was halted on Sunday after the course was deemed unplayable, with the final results reflecting only two rounds of play, leaving the Owls in a tie for seventh place with North Carolina Greensboro at 51-over par 627.
The Owls got an encouraging performance from freshman Ket Preamchuen in her first collegiate tournament, as the newcomer led Kennesaw at the par-72, Furman University Golf Course. Preamchuen, who shot a 4-over par 76 in round one, was solid on Saturday as well, finishing with a second round 74, to jump into a tie for fourth with a 6-over par 150 total.
Following Preamchuen in the standings was Patricia Arana who carded a 79 for the second consecutive day on Saturday, to finish the first two rounds, and the tournament, at 14-over par 158.
After shooting a 6-over 78 in the first round to finish in a tie for 18th, Jordan Lazenby fell in the standings to 35th on Saturday, bringing her to 15-over par 159 for the tournament.
The Owls final two competitors, Ashley Aguilera and Abby Fitzgerald tied for 60th and 74th, at 18-over par 162 and 21-over par 165, respectively.
Despite the inclement weather conditions, the Owls behind Preamchuen, finished round one strong on Friday, shooting a 26-over par 316, to leave them in fourth place, trailing leader, East Tennessee State by only eight strokes.
On Saturday, the Owls, once again battling the rain, completed the second round with a total of 313, dropping them from fourth place to a tie for seventh, where with the absence of a round three, they finished the tournament.
"Although we were disappointed to not get the third round completed and receive a chance to move up the leader board, I'm happy with the start to the season," Head Coach Rhyll Brinsmead said. "We beat teams we have never beaten before, and got a really strong start from Ket. "Now, we are looking forward to backing this tournament up with a strong showing at Kentucky this weekend."
Nova Southeastern took home the victory, finishing up at 35-over par 611, followed by Campbell, Furman, Stetson, ETSU, and East Carolina.
The Owls will return to action when they travel to Lexington, Ky., to compete in the UK Fall Invite hosted by the University of Kentucky on Sept. 25-27.
