GREENVILLE, S.C. - It was an impressive first round for the Owls as Kennesaw State stands in fourth place after the first round of play at the Lady Paladin Invitational at the Furman University Golf Course.
The Owls, who shot a 26-over par 316, are a shot ahead of Atlantic Sun Conference rival Campbell, two strokes ahead of Penn State and trail leader ETSU by just eight shots after the first day of the three-day event.
“Given the conditions today I am very happy with the teams play,” said head coach Ryhll Brinsmead. “It rained through 90 percent of our round and the course was very wet. But, the team grinded all day and really came through with some great shots when needed.”
Kennesaw State was led by freshman Ket Premchuen who shot a solid 4-over par 76 and is tied for 7th place, three strokes behind leader Laura Jansone of ETSU. In her collegiate debut, the Owls newcomer shot a 1-under par over the final nine holes including a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole and was par or better in 13 of the final 14 holes of the first round.
“Ket’s one under 35 was very impressive,” added Brinsmead. “She was very patient with her round and I’m proud of how she hung in there and finished so strong.”
Jordan Lazenby, who is tied for 18th place, shot a 6-over 78 and got off to a solid start as she stood just 3-over par through 13 holes. Patricia Arana was the Owls third best finisher for the Black and Gold, shooting a 7-over par 79 for the round.
Abby Fitzgerald finished at 9-over 81, but ended the day on a solid note she bogeyed the final hole, the par-4 ninth. Ashley Aguilera birdied on the first and third holes and finished at 11-over par 83 for the day.
The second round of the three-round event is scheduled for Saturday at the Furman University Golf Course. The event can be followed online at www.golfstat.com.
