The Owls men’s tennis team will look to improve upon their inaugural season this weekend, when they return to action, traveling to Statesboro, Ga., to compete in the Georgia Southern Fall Invitational.
The tournament, which will take place from Sept. 11-13, will kick off the fall season for the Owls.
“It will be good for us to get a chance to see some of our conference opponents early in the season and see where we stack up,” Owls’ Director of Tennis Operations, TJ Greggs said. “Mercer and UNF are both schools who handed us losses last year, so it will be good to see if we have raised our level enough to compete with the stronger teams in the Atlantic Sun Conference.”
This season marks only the second year the Owls’ men’s tennis program has been in existence. Despite the young team, the Owls had a solid inaugural season, earning seven spring wins, including victories against Atlantic Sun opponents, Lipscomb and Florida Gulf Coast.
This weekends matches will also mark the beginning of freshman recruits, Gianni Kubin, Gokalp Ozdemir, and Elliot Kahler’s, Owls’ careers.
“I am excited to see how our new players respond to their first college action,” Greggs said. “All three have played at a high level in junior tennis, so I have no doubt they will be able to handle the pressure of their first college matches.”
Following this weekend’s action, the Owls will remain close to home, making the short trip to Athens, Ga., to compete in the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on September 17-21.
