BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Despite staging a six run comeback in the final innings of game one against Campbell, the Owls dropped an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader to the Camels on Tuesday afternoon at the Eakes Athletic Complex. Kennesaw State lost game one, 8-6, before falling, 4-0, in the nightcap.
The Owls (15-18, 2-6 A-Sun) got off to a slow start in the first game, allowing Campbell (27-11, 12-4 A-Sun) to score six runs in the first four innings. Christina Melton put the Camels on the board in the second inning with a three-run home run to right field. Singles from Hillary Wheatley, Lizzie Goldblach and Karli Love in the fourth scored three more runs to put the Camels up 6-0.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Owls offense came alive and cut the Camel lead in half with a three-run homerun from Jenna Closner, her fourth of the season. Closner scored Lyndsay McCurry who reached on a fielding error and Hollie Huffman who singled to third base earlier in the inning.
Campbell added two more runs in the bottom of the inning off of a double from Wheatley and a single from Robin Leathers to give them an 8-3 advantage.
The Black and Gold did not give up, tallying four hits and scoring three more runs in the seventh inning that included singles from McCurry, Huffman, Klair Wells and a two-run RBI double from Closner. Campbell relief pitcher Katie Woodcock stopped the KSU run, striking out the final two batters of the inning to secure the 8-6 Camel victory.
Amanda Burns (2-3) received the loss for the Owls, giving up three hits and six earned runs in three innings while Catherine Tarvin pitched three innings in relief. Campbell's Brittany Stanley (10-3) struck out six and gave up six hits in six innings.
Campbell once again took an early lead in the nightcap, scoring two runs in the first inning from a Hinton home run and two KSU errors.
Kennesaw State came close to cutting the lead in half in the fourth when Closner and Moore led off the inning with singles but Campbell hurler, Lauren Stephan (8-3), stopped the Owl offense, striking out the next two batters and forcing a ground-out to end the inning.
Collecting four hits in the bottom of the frame, Campbell gave themselves a 3-0 advantage with singles from Stephan, Wheatley, Keeli Michael and Leathers.
Even though the Owls had another opportunity to score in the sixth inning, it was the Camels that added an insurance run in the bottom of the inning when Leathers tallied her 14th home run of the year, giving Campbell the 4-0 win.
McCurry, who is on a five-game hitting streak, and Closner each tallied two hits while April Harper (6-5) received the loss for the Owls. The freshman hurler gave up nine hits with four strikeouts in six innings.
Kennesaw State returns to A-Sun action this weekend when they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to play North Florida on Friday, April 10. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
