KENNESAW, Ga. - Curtis Van Wyck and Josh Whitaker each had three RBIs in game one as the Kennesaw State baseball team defeated Georgia Southern, 13-10, in the first game of a doubleheader at Stillwell Stadium. In game two, the Eagles prevailed, 12-6. The two games combined to last seven hours and nine minutes, with a half-hour break in between.
Georgia Southern scored the first two runs in the first inning of game one, but the Owls sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning, plating five. Van Wyck and Whitaker each had a pair of RBIs in the rally.
The Owls (25-17) scored four times in the second to build a 9-2 advantage. Andrew Martin drove in the first run of the frame with a sacrifice fly. After a walk to Whitaker, an error on a failed pickoff attempt allowed Martin Baker to score the second run. Van Wyck and Jon White followed with run-scoring hits to complete the scoring in the second.
One inning later, to more runs came home as Baker's single to right scored Tyler Stubblefield and Whitaker getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded plated Ric Bishop, who had four hits in game one.
The Owls stretched the lead to 10 when a sacrifice fly by Bishop scored Jacob Robbins to make the score 12-2.
Georgia Southern (31-12) made a game of it in the fifth by scoring seven runs to make the score 12-9. After a run in the sixth for the Eagles, the lead was down to two. But the Owls would tack on an insurance run in the eighth as Jacob Robbins tripled to left center to score Jon White, giving the Owls a 13-10 win.
Sean Fream (1-0) earned his first collegiate win with 4.1 innings of work. Kenny Faulk got the last three outs for KSU to earn his fourth save.
In game two, the Owls led 4-1 after three innings, but GSU would score the next 11 runs, including seven in the seventh, to put the game away. Clint Roques went 4-for-5 in the contest with an RBI and a run scored, while Robbins, Stubblefield, and Bishop each had a pair of hits.
KSU will be back in action this Friday when it hosts Jacksonville for game one of an important Atlantic Sun Conference series. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m.
