KENNESAW, Ga. - Catherine Tarvin allowed just one hit through eight innings, but the Kennesaw State defense gave up two errors in the bottom of the eighth to help USC Upstate defeat the Owls, 1-0, in the nightcap of an Atlantic Sun Conference doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Bailey Park.
Tarvin (6-12) gave up just one hit in the sixth inning when Kim Brasil singled to left field. Kennesaw State (20-28, 6-12) had several opportunities to score throughout the game, tallying four hits and leaving five runners on base.
Scoreless through five and a half innings, the Owls led off the sixth with a walk from Jamie KeKaualua who advanced to third on a single from Jenna Closner. With runners on the corners, the Black and Gold could not deliver, striking out to end the inning.
In the eighth, the Owls committed two consecutive throwing errors that would cost them the game. Janna Lewis and Monica Hall both reached on the errors and Lewis would score on a Brasil fielder's choice.
Brittany Moore, Tarvin, Closner and Jacki Warren singled in the game.
Upstate's (28-15, 10-8 A-Sun) Morgan Childers (22-9) picked up the win for the Spartans, breaking her own single season strikeout record.
The Owls wrap up A-Sun play on Saturday afternoon at Bailey Park when they host East Tennessee State for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader. Before the action, the Owls will pay honor to the Lorelei Ladies with a luncheon beginning at noon. At 1:45 p.m. KSU will also honor seniors Jamie KeKaualua and Jacki Warren for Senior Day.
