CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Kennesaw State men's golf team got off to a rocky start in its last event before the Atlantic Sun Conference Championship, finishing the day in tenth place, Monday, at Charlotte's Palisades Collegiate Golf Classic.
The Owls, who were paired with No. 41 Louisville and the No. 65 host 49er's, opened with a 298 before improving six strokes in the afternoon session to record a 590 team total. Despite leading the field in pars (116), the Black and Gold are 13 strokes out of the top five.
J.P. Putnam led the Owls on a day when red numbers were required to make a move, going 75-72 for a 147 total and a tie for 34th. Jeff Karlsson and Chad Wilson came in just a stroke back in a tie for 37th. Karlsson carded an even par second round after an opening 76, while Wilson led the Owls with a morning 73 before closing with a 75.
Rounding out the scoring for the Owls were Michael Tulacz and Matthew Nagy, who made it to the clubhouse in 149 and 150 respectively. Tulacz (74-75) contributed scores to the team effort in both rounds, while Nagy's (77-73) afternoon 73 was key in the team's second round improvement.
No. 74 Virginia Commonwealth is in the team lead after turning in a 24-under par 552. Louisville is five strokes back at 557 after carding an impressive 21-under par 267 in the afternoon.
VCU's Vincent Nadeau (67-65) and Louisville's Riley Wheeldon (71-61) share the individual lead with twelve-under par 132's. Riley's 11-under par second round set a tournament record.
The final round is set to begin at 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning at the 6,797-yard, par-72 Palisades Golf and Country Club. A recap of the action will be available on the KSU Athletics homepage shortly following the conclusion of play.
