Box Score

KENNESAW, Ga. - For the second straight game, Kennesaw State broke a tie score in the eighth inning, using four runs to defeat USC Upstate, 10-6, in game one of an Atlantic Sun Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

With men on first and second, Bucky Smith lined a double down the line in left, scoring both runners to put KSU up 8-6. Two batters later, Jace Whitmer launched a two-run homer over the wall in left, putting the game out of reach for the Spartans.

KSU (16-12, 9-3) trailed early after a pair of Spartans runs in the first inning. KSU came back with a run in the first on an RBI double by Ric Bishop, then tacked on three runs in the fourth to take the lead as Martin Baker and Clint Roques each had RBI hits.

Upstate came back with three runs in the seventh inning to take the lead, 5-4, but the Owls responded with a pair in the bottom of the inning as Andrew Martin sent a pitch from Philip Myers (1-3) over the wall in left.

Upstate scored in the eighth to knot the score at 6-all, but Clint Roques reached on an error and Jacob Robbins walked in the bottom of the inning, setting the stage for the heroics of Smith and Whitmer.

Kenny Faulk (4-2) got the final eight outs of the game for the win.

Game two of the doubleheader was scheduled to begin at approximately 4:30 p.m.
