WOODSTOCK, Ga. - Kennesaw State used a five-run, fourth inning to blow open a 1-1 game as the Owls defeated Albany (N.Y.), 6-1, at the Buzz Classic at the Twin Creek Softball Complex on Saturday night.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Owls (8-11) and evened their record at 2-2 at the Buzz Classic with one game remaining, tomorrow afternoon against Indiana State at 1:00 p.m.
April Harper (1-2) was again tremendous for the Owls. The right-hander, who appeared in her fifth consecutive game, earned her first collegiate win as she pitched a complete-game, three-hitter.
Kennesaw State pounded out nine hits in the game and got two-hit games from Klair Wells, Catherine Tarvin and Jamie KeKaualua. Rachel Chapman, Jenna Closner and Kelsey Kulk also had hits for the Black and Gold.
The Owls got on the board in the second inning when Tarvin singled and Chapman followed with a double. A sacrifice fly by Closner would score the games first run and give the Owls the lead.
Albany () tied the game in the top of the third inning when with two outs, Adrianna Walraven deposited a Harper fastball over the left-center field fence.
The Black and Gold then broke the game open in the fourth inning as they scored five times off Marissa Powell. An RBI-single by Kulk gave KSU a 2-1 lead and KeKaualua ripped a triple to center field scoring a pair of runs and pushing the KSU lead to three runs.
Wells then delivered a run-scoring single bringing home KeKaualua and Hollie Huffman dropped down a perfect bunt, squeezing home Lyndsay McCurry with the Owls sixth run.
Harper pitched out of a jam in the fifth inning when with two outs she walked Nicole Kothe, Walraven and Kristine Bill to load the bases before getting Michelle Connors to groundout to shortstop to end the threat.
