WOODSTOCK, Ga. - The Owls lost their second straight game at the Buzz Classic as Akron defeated Kennesaw State, 4-1, at the Twin Creek Softball Complex on Saturday afternoon.
The Owls (7-11) spotted the Zips two runs in the bottom of the first inning and escaped what could have been a much more damaging start with solid defense. Kennesaw State catcher Jenna Closner threw out a runner stealing and had a pair of tag outs at the plate which kept KSU close, trailing 2-0.
The Black and Gold were able to chip back at the Akron lead when they scored in the top of the third inning on an RBI single by Brittany Moore, scoring Lyndsay McCurry (2-for-3) who had led off the inning with a single and stole second base.
However, the Owls wouldn't come any closer as Akron (8-7) added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning and one in the sixth for the three-run victory. Kennesaw State would have just three base runners over the final four innings.
Hollie Huffman and Klair Wells each singled as the Owls had five hits in the game. April Harper, who picked up her first save of the season yesterday against Boston College, pitched five innings after replacing Catherine Tarvin. Harper was again effective for the Owls, allowing just two runs in five innings.
