WOODSTOCK, Ga. - Amanda Burns shutdown Boston College over the first four innings and April Harper came in for the final three innings as the Owls held off the Eagles 2-1 on Friday afternoon in the first day of the Buzz Classic at the Twin Creek Softball Complex.
Burns (2-2) pitched four shutout innings en route to her second win of the season while Harper notched her first save of the year with three effective innings.
Hollie Huffman, who had two hits on the day, drove in Kennesaw State's (6-9) first run with an infield single, scoring Klair Wells who doubled to center field to ignite the two-out, third inning rally.
The Owls added what proved to be a much needed insurance run in the top of the sixth inning when singles by Jenna Closner, Lyndsay McCurry and Jamie KeKaualua loaded the bases. Brittany Moore singled to center field for a 2-0 Kennesaw State advantage.
Boston College (7-10) made things close in the bottom of the seventh when Dani Wier led off with a homerun to straight away center field. With one out, Alison Kooistra was hit by a pitch but Harper regrouped and got a pair of groundouts to end the game and give the Black and Gold its second win in three games.
The Owls will play Centenary College at 6:00 p.m. to conclude the first day of competition at the Buzz Classic.
