JACKSONVILLE, Ala. - Jacksonville State's Karla Pittman pitched a two-hit shutout at University Field to defeat the Owls, 4-0, on Wednesday night.
Pittman (2-0) went the distance, giving up two hits and striking out five in seven innings.
One of the Owls' (6-9) two hits came from Jenna Closner in the fourth inning, breaking up Pittman's no-hitter. Freshman Brittany Moore tallied KSU's only other hit of the contest in the top of the fifth.
The Gamecocks (11-4) put their first run on the board in the second inning off a homerun from Nikki Prier. Chrissy O'Neal also homered later in the game, scoring Hilary Downs.
Jacksonville State added an insurance run off a double from Meredith Sellers in the fifth inning.
Amanda Burns (1-2) picked up the loss for the Black and Gold, only giving up four hits and striking out six in 4.2 innings. April Harper came in to pitch the remaining 1.1 innings.
This weekend, Kennesaw State will compete in the Buzz Classic, hosted by Georgia Tech. The Owls will take on Boston College at 1:00 p.m. and Centenary College at 6:00 p.m. on Friday at the Twin Creek Softball Complex in Woodstock, Ga.
