Box Score
DeLAND, Fla. - Kennesaw State scored in the first eight innings of the contest, topping Stetson 13-9 to complete a doubleheader sweep in Atlantic Sun Conference baseball action at Melching Field.
The Owls (11-11, 5-3) jumped on top when Andrew Martin's sacrifice fly in the first scored Jacob Robbins with the first run of the game. KSU led 2-0 when Bucky Smith scored Drew Fowlkes with a single.
Stetson came back with a run in the second, but the Owls answered with a run in the third on Fowlkes' RBI single to center. The Hatters tried to take control of the game in the bottom of the inning with a 5-spot, taking advantage of two KSU errors to go on top, 6-3. Undaunted, the Owls kept pecking away, scoring a run in the fourth on Smith's third homer of the doubleheader, then adding another run in the fifth on a double to left by Jon White.
Down 6-5 entering the sixth, the Owls took the lead for good when Tyler Stubblefield launched a two-run homer to left-center, putting KSU ahead 7-6. The Owls tacked on another run three batters later when Ric Bishop doubled to left, scoring Martin.
Two more Owls touched home safely in the seventh. Drew Fowlkes led off the inning with a home run over the wall in right. Then with the bases loaded, Martin drew a free pass, scoring Clint Roques with KSU's 10th run of the ball game.
The Black and Gold put the game out of reach in the eighth with three more runs. Roques and Robbins had back-to-back doubles to score the first two runs of the inning, while Stubblefield completed the scoring for KSU with an RBI single to right. The Hatters (10-17, 3-6) scored three in the home half of the eighth inning, but it would not be enough as KSU held on for the victory.
Brad Long (3-0) earned the win in relief of Ryan Rodebaugh. Long went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs in his final inning of work. Long only allowed two hits to Hatters batters.
The Owls will return to action when they travel to Clinton, S.C., to face Presbyterian this Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
