ATHENS, Ga. - The Owls looked strong at the Georgia Relays in Athens, Ga. over the weekend, setting several new school records, while recording some top finishes as well.
On day one, sophomore Mackenzie Howe led the Owls on the track, placing second in the 5k run with a time of 17:32.46, while Erin Sutton finished right behind her in third at 17:34.51.
Off the track, Jill Arthur was impressive for the Owls, placing third in the triple jump with a distance of 38-07.50ft. Suzzette Van-Lare looked strong in the event also, taking sixth (37-07.25ft.).
In the shot put, Chiquita Hawthorne took the top finish for Kennesaw, with an eight place finish and a distance of 36-08.25. Her teammate, Jessica Lumpkin was not far behind in 10th, at 34-07.25ft.
Lumpkin also recorded a 10th place finish in the hammer throw on Friday with a distance of 44.98m, with Hawthorne following in 14th at 39.97m.
On Saturday, Van-Lare recorded another sixth place finish, this time in the long jump, with a distance of 17-08.00, wile Arthur took 11th at 16-10.75ft.
Sutton came back strong on Saturday as well to lead the Owls in the 1500m run with a seventh place finish, coming in with a time of 4:44.08, while Kristen Gibson took tenth at 4:58.73.
Meanwhile, in the 3k Steeplechase, Lorena Jaime recorded the top finish for the Owls, placing 10th (12:00.64) with Katie Charles finishing right behind her in 11th (12:34.61).
In hurdling events, Jessica Wilcox led the Owls in the 100m hurdles, taking fifth with a time of 15.80, while Lakeshia Stinson took sixth (15.95).
Naomi Mack represented the Owls in the 400m hurdles, placing fifth, crossing the line with a time of 1:07.30.
The Owls also competed in a series of Relay races on Saturday, starting with the 4 X 100. Kennesaw State's `A' team of Lakeshia Stinson, Shantela Davis, Victoria Jackson, and Shelby Hines, took third in the contest, coming in at 47.94, a new school record, while the `B' team finished right behind them in fourth at 50.47.
Next, in the 4 X 200, the Owls team of Jackson, Davis, Sandi Brown, and Hines took a fourth place finish with a time of 1:41.88, another new school record.
In the 4 X 400 relay, Kennesaw State's `A' team of Brittany Robinson, Davis, Jenae Todd, and Hines looked strong with a fourth place finish, coming in with a time of 3:55.11, a new school record, while the `B' team took sixth at 4:05.67.
"Shelby had an awesome meet, " Assistant Coach Devin West said. "She was very consistent, dropping time every race. As a freshman, we have been very impressed by her."
In the 800m Sprint Medley relay, consisting of a 100, 200, 300, and 400m legs, the Owls took a fourth place finish with a time of 1:50.82.
Off the track on day two of the competition, Jakia Ragland looked strong in the high jump, recording a second place finish with a height of 5-06.50. Her teammate, Wilcox finished in a four way tie for seventh with a height of 5-00.50.
"The majority of the team performed well," West said. "Some didn't perform as well as they would have liked but it is still early in the season, which has a lot to do with it. There is still a lot of room for improvement. This week we will focus on the changes we need to make and look to have a good showing at Georgia Tech."
The Owls will return to action when they compete close to home at Georgia Tech next weekend, on March 27-28.
