ATHENS, Ga. - The Owls saw their six-game winning streak snapped as the No. 9-ranked Georgia Bulldogs rallied with a four-run, sixth inning to come-from-behind and defeat Kennesaw State, 5-2, at the UGA Softball Stadium on Wednesday evening.
Kennesaw State (13-12) made things difficult for the nationally-ranked Bulldogs, giving UGA all they could handle as starter April Harper shut down Georgia over four innings. The right-hander surrendered a run in the first inning, but then regrouped and took advantage of double plays in the first and fourth innings to keep the Owls within a run.
Jenna Closner provided the big blow for Kennesaw State as she hit a two-run, opposite field, line drive home run that skidded off the top of the right-center field fence with two outs in the fourth inning to give the Owls a, 2-1, lead. Closner's third home run of the season came after Rachel Chapman singled to center field.
Catherine Tarvin (5-5) retired the side in order in the bottom of the fifth inning after replacing Harper. However, the left-hander would fall into trouble in the sixth inning as Georgia (17-4) smacked a pair of two-run homers to take the lead.
Kristin Schnacke (3-for-3) led off with a single up the middle and Alisa Goler followed with her 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center field to push UGA ahead by a run. After a walk to Megan Wiggins, Brianna Henson followed with her fourth longball of the season, a blast to right-center field making the score 5-2.
Christie Hamilton (7-3) picked up the win for Georgia as she struck out all six batters she faced after entering the game in relief of starter Sarah McCloud in the sixth inning.
The Owls will be back in action this weekend as they begin Atlantic Sun Conference play on Saturday, March 21 with a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Mercer Bears in Macon, Ga.
