ONEONTA, Ala. - The Kennesaw State women's golf team continued its strong play on Monday, finishing the day tied for fifth at the rain-soaked Samford Intercollegiate after three Owls got into the clubhouse inside of the top 20.
The Black and Gold turned in a team 313 to put themselves just a stroke back of a three-way tie for third and only eight shots out of the lead held by Samford at 305. The Owls' Atlantic Sun Conference rival Jacksonville is in second at 307 while Belmont is tied for 10th.
"The team is really playing with a ton of confidence right now and it is showing in our scores," said Kennesaw State Head Coach Rhyll Brinsmead on the Owls strong play of late. "We believe we have a chance at the title here, so we just need to go out and play at a high enough level to put ourselves in contention."
Freshman Patricia Arana continued lead the Owls after carding a two-over par 74 to jump into a tie for third. Arana, who has paced Kennesaw State in both events she has played in since joining the team over the winter break, is just three strokes off of the individual lead held by the host's Katelyn Stanier at 71.
Jordan Lazenby and Malin Becker shot nearly identical 79's to tie for 19th heading into the final round. Lazenby is tied for third with three birdies while Becker turned in the Owls lowest back nine after coming down the stretch in 38. Laura Lindsey rounded out the scoring for KSU with an 81.
The Owls were second as a team in par five scoring (5.30) and tied for third in birdies (8) and par four scoring (4.46).
"A solid finish tomorrow will give us another boost of confidence heading into the week of practice for the Larry Nelson," added Brinsmead.
The second of Monday's two rounds was called off due to the rainy conditions and will not be made up. Teams will play the final round on Tuesday and the winners will be determined based on their 36-hole totals.
