DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Kennesaw State softball team scored a combined 31 hits and 23 runs in a doubleheader sweep over Bethune Cookman on Wednesday afternoon at Sunnyland Park in Daytona Beach, Fla.
The Owls (13-11) defeated Bethune Cookman (5-19) 11-3 in game one which saw April Harper (4-2) pick up her fourth consecutive victory and limit the Wildcats to eight hits. BCU's Allison Garcia (4-10) received the loss, letting the Owls tally 13 hits.
Seven Owls recorded a hit in the game, including Jenna Closner (two-for-four) who hit a grand slam in the first inning, scoring Hollie Huffman and Catherine Tarvin, who singled earlier in the inning, to give KSU an early 5-0 lead.
The Wildcats put a run on the board in the bottom of the frame but it was the Black and Gold that kept the offense coming, scoring another run in the fourth inning and then three more in the seventh. Jessica Symanski and Jamie KeKaualua singled, followed by a Klair Wells double to put Kennesaw State up 11-3 and then held off the Wildcats in the bottom of the frame.
In the nightcap, the Owls recorded a season high 18 hits that saw Tarvin (5-4) receive the 12-1 win, giving up only seven hits while striking out four in six innings.
Nine Owls recorded hits in the game that started in the first inning with a single from Brittany Moore. With two outs, Chapman was hit by a pitch and Closner doubled to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.
After Huffman put KSU up 3-0 with an RBI-double to center field in the second, Bethune Cookman's Ashton Hinds doubled in the bottom of the frame to score Ashley Taylor who singled earlier in the inning.
Ahead 3-1 in the fifth inning, the Owls turned up the heat and scored four runs that began with a single from Tarvin followed by a Chapman walk. Closner then reached on an error by the Wildcats right fielder, scoring two runs. Kelsey Kulk and KeKaualua scored the final two runs of the inning with Kulk picking up her first triple of the year.
Kennesaw State ended the game in the sixth inning when they connected for six hits that started with a Moore double and Tarvin single. Ahead 7-1, Jordan Hackett singled to load the bases and Closner and Kulk drove in two runs. Lyndsay McCurry and Wells also singled to give the Owls the 12-1 victory.
On a six game win streak, the Owls travel to Georgia Tech for a 2:00 p.m. contest on Saturday, March 14 in Atlanta, Ga.
