Final Stats
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Lawrence Washington and Michael Langel had to retire due to injury as the Owls fell 6-1 to Appalachian State on Tuesday in the first of two road matches in Daytona Beach.
The Owls (3-6, 0-1) fell behind early, losing all three doubles matches to get themselves in an early hole. Singles didn't prove much better, as KSU lost its hottest singles player, Langel, and half of its top doubles team, Washington, to injury.
Tyler Mills lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 before Langel had to call it quits in the third set at No. 4 because of an injury. Ryan Bouttell kept the Owls in the match for a short while, winning his third in row after taking a 6-4, 6-2 decision at No. 6 from Alain Humblet, whom he had never taken a set off of in junior tennis.
The Mountaineers closed out the match shortly after when Phillip Kloc straight-setted Andrew Suesserman 6-1, 6-4 at No. 5. With the match already decided, Washington retired down 3-0 in the third set.
"Today was frustrating, mainly because we played so well but also because we were unable to stay on the court to finish a couple of matches," said Kennesaw State Head Coach Brandon Padgett. "I hope we can be healthy enough to compete tomorrow against Bethune-Cookman."
The Owls will attempt to put together a complete healthy lineup in a hurry as they are scheduled to face the Wildcats at 2 p.m. on Wednesday. A recap of the action will be available at www.ksuowls.com shortly following the conclusion of play.
