ONEONTA, Ala. - Matthew Nagy shot a five-under par 67 in the afternoon session at the Samford Intercollegiate on Monday, leading the Owls into solo second place at the 6,987-yard, par-72 Limestone Springs Golf Club.

The Owls sophomore also opened strong, shooting a one-over par 73 in the more difficult morning conditions to finish the day in fourth place with a four-under par 140. His 67 tied Kris Shepherd for the lowest 18-hole total in relation to par in KSU Division I history. Nagy is tied for third in par four scoring (3.90) and pars (23), and trails individual leader Cameron Carrico (Murray St.) by only four strokes.

The rest of the Owls squad looked sharp on the course as well, as the entire team is inside of the top 30 heading into the final round.

"Today was a beautiful day with perfect conditions and a very scorable course, so I think it could have been even better," said Kennesaw State Head Coach Blake Smart on the Owls performance. "That being said, it is as well as we have played in a while so I am pleased."

J.P. Putnam is tied for ninth at an even-par 144 after matching the morning-low 18 with an opening round 69. Michael Tulacz snuck into the top 20 into a tie for 19th after coming in under par for the first time in three events with a second round 71.

Jeff Karlsson used two eagles and a field leading eight-under par total on the course's par fives to shoot 148 and come in tied for 23. Patrick Kenney, playing in his first collegiate event, finished just a stroke behind in a tie for 27th after contributing an even-par 72 to the team score in the second round.

The Owls lead the field in eagles (3) and par five scoring (4.50). They are also second with 102 pars and fourth with 37 birdies.

Murray State is in the team lead at 564 after shooting 288-276. The Owls hold a slim two-stroke advantage over third place Illinois State.

"Tomorrow we will need to play very well to have a chance," added Smart. "It will have to be a team effort with four quality scores."

A recap and scores will be available on the Kennesaw State Athletics homepage following the conclusion of play.
