ORLANDO, Fla. - April Harper picked up her second straight shutout of the season as the Owls began their Florida road trip on a triumphant note, defeating Ball State, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon at the UCF Softball Complex.
The Owls (10-11) won their third consecutive game and captured their second straight, 1-0, victory as Harper pushed her scoreless streak to 20 innings. After earning two wins and a save over the weekend at the Buzz Classic, Harper (3-2) pitched a six-hit, seven inning complete game.
Kennesaw State scored the games only run in the bottom of the fourth inning when with one out, Rachel Chapman was hit by a pitch. Jenna Closner and Jessica Symanski then reached on errors by the Cardinals third baseman, Kathryn Wilczynski, the second of the inning scored Chapman, giving KSU a 1-0 lead.
Ball State (4-9) had several opportunities to put runs on the board, but each time Harper stopped the potential rally. In the first inning, Lisa Rozanski led off the game with a triple to right field, but Harper retired the next three batters to end the inning.
Harper was also able to pitch out of a bases loaded jam in the top of the fifth inning when Ball State put together three singles, but Harper regrouped and got Jen Reifschneider to fly out to center field to end the inning.
Kennesaw State got two hits in the game off of Ball State's Elizabeth Milian (3-6), who also pitched a complete game. Klair Wells singled to center field to lead off the game and Lindsay McCurry, who beat out a bunt single in the third inning.
The Black and Gold will take on Central Florida in the second game of the doubleheader with the first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
