STARKVILLE, Miss. - Even though Iona took an early 1-0 lead after the first inning, Kennesaw State used a four-run fifth inning to defeat the Gaels, 9-1, on Sunday afternoon in the final day of the Bulldog Round-Robin.
Jessica Cross (2-0) picked up her second win of the year for the Owls (3-1) after giving up only one run in the first inning off of a walk and two wild pitches.
KSU tied the game in the second inning when Jessica Symanski doubled to left center, scoring Jacki Warren who reached base on a fielding error.
The Black and Gold extended its lead in the third when Klair Wells led off with a single and was followed with an RBI double from Catherine Tarvin. Cross reached on an error by the catcher and Jenna Closner walked to load the bases. Amanda Harper picked up her first RBI of the season and Symanski connected for her second hit of the game, driving in a run. Jordan Hackett drove in the final run of the inning, putting the Owls up 5-1.
The Gaels (0-4) picked up three hits in the fourth and fifth innings, but it was the Owls that put on an offensive show in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits. Amanda Burns reached base to lead off the inning and scored after Hollie Huffman, Hackett and Wells all singled. Tarvin scored a run after drawing the walk and KSU went up 8-1 on an illegal pitch. Cross added the Owls final run when she singled to center field.
The Owls combined for a total of ten hits as Wells, Cross, Tarvin and Symanski each had two hits.
Cross had four strikeouts, giving up three hits and one run in four innings.
Kennesaw State continues play next weekend when they host the Phyliss Rafter Memorial. The Owls take on Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13.
