STARVILLE, Miss. - After picking up a save in Friday night's victory over Mississippi State, Jessica Cross once again helped lead the Owls to victory. The right-hander threw a complete game in KSU's, 7-2, victory over Iona on Saturday afternoon in their second game of the Bulldog Round-Robin.
Cross (1-0) picked up her first win of the season as she limited the Gaels (0-2) to a pair of hits and one earned run while striking out nine batters.
The Owls (2-0) jumped off to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Klair Wells led off the game with a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Catherine Tarvin and Cross followed with singles through the right side, with Tarvin picking up her first RBI of the season. After Closner walked to load the bases, Tarvin scored on a wild pitch, putting KSU up 2-0.
Iona, who lost their season opener to UL-Monroe, cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning when Erin Kyle homered to left center, leaving the Gaels only down by one.
The Owls turned up the heat in the second inning when they scored three runs. A single to left field by Wells started things off and then Cross came up with a single down the left field line. A two-run double from Jenna Closner followed and the Owls catcher advanced to third on a throwing error. A wild pitch added the third run of the inning as the Owls led, 5-1.
Even though Iona scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning, it was the Owls who continued their offensive surge, scoring another run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly from Rachel Chapman. The Owls finished their scoring with an RBI double by Tarvin, scoring Wells who had singled earlier in the inning.
Cross led all players with three hits while Tarvin and Wells had two hits apiece. Connally and Closner each tallied a hit with Closner driving in two runs for the second straight game.
